THE COVERED MARKET:
tHE “LOUVRE” OF LIVORNO

An imposing structure, a place of alliance and conviviality that from a simple market has become a benchmark for people living in Livorno and tourists

It is one of the most fascinating and interesting buildings of Livorno, from an architectural point of view, dating back to the Nineteenth century, as shown by the typical iron and glass structure about those years. Surely the most impressive work in the campaign for the reorganization of the services of the city of Livorno that took place at the end of the Nineteenth century.

Even recently, the structure has been subject of a series of investments with a prospect of redevelopment and revival, both on the commercial and on the tourist attractiveness levels: from a simple market that gathered people from every corner of the city, the Covered Market has become today a place where you can enjoy the most varied supply of food and wine, thanks to coffees, the refreshment area and the event space.

The interior of the structure, in fact, houses a main hall with many stalls of all kinds of food, both fresh and not, and some smaller pavillons on the back, organizing evening events until the aperitif time or even after dinner to ensure livability in the evening too.

Despite this, the day is still the best moment to admire the structure: thanks to the facade, 95 meters wide, and its large windows, the brightness of the building is maximum when the sun shines high in the sky.

Oh, we almost forgot… the Covered Market is perfect to taste typical dishes of Livorno: from a fragran cacciucco to the “5e5”, the typical sandwich with chickpeas flavour, up to local wines and the “ponce alla livornese”, a mix of rhum, coffee, sugar and lemon peel.
